“Blame the Parents!” – A Note on Modern Parenting Advice

Okay, parents, let’s be honest. It feels like everywhere we turn, there’s another article, podcast, or Instagram Reel telling us how we’re messing up our kids. Apparently, we’re either helicoptering too close or giving them too much freedom. We’re over-scheduling them or letting them rot their brains with screens. It’s enough to make you want to throw your phone out the window and join a nomadic tribe in the Himalayas.

The irony is, while we’re bombarded with parenting advice, our teens, who practically live online, seem to get a free pass. Where are the TikTok tutorials on “How to Not Be a Grumpy Teenager”? Where are the YouTube videos on “Effective Communication for Angsty Adolescents”?

Instead, it’s all on us. We’re the ones who need to learn the magic formula for raising perfectly adjusted humans in a world that feels increasingly chaotic. We’re expected to decode eye rolls, interpret grunts, and navigate mood swings like emotional ninjas. And all this while remembering to pack healthy lunches, sign permission slips, and maintain some semblance of a social life.

But here’s the thing: Parenting is hard. Really hard. And sometimes, despite our best efforts, our kids will still be grumpy, moody, and downright impossible. That’s not necessarily a reflection of our parenting skills. It’s called being a teenager.

So, the next time you stumble across an article titled “10 Mistakes You’re Making as a Parent” or a podcast called “Taming the Teenage Beast,” take it with a grain of salt (and maybe a giant slice of chocolate cake). Remember that you’re not alone in this crazy journey. We’re all just doing our best to navigate the wild world of parenthood, one eye roll and slammed door at a time.

And to all the teenagers out there: We love you, even when you’re being aliens. But hey, a little online tutorial on “How to Survive Puberty Without Torturing Your Parents” wouldn’t hurt, right? πŸ˜‰
